The new session at Delhi University(DU) started with a bang, thanks to the big, glamorous fight for the office.
Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections are one of the most hi-profile. It’s a gigantic affair providing direct opportunity to the students to enter the politics, with the backing of political parties.
Forty-one candidates from NSUI, ABVP, AISA and AISF contended for the posts of President, Vice-President, Secretary and Joint-Secretary. The elections took place on 10th September in college campuses.
Security was tight for supposed unrest but the elections went smoothly and 96,000 students were expected to cast their votes, only 35% turned up.
What contributed to smooth elections were some new guidelines. No open jeeps or loud music was played on the campuses, and posters were also restricted. Candidates, who flouted the rules, were given the slip.
The new office came into being on September 11 with ABVP winning 3 main posts – President, Vice-President and Secretary. NSUI managed to hang on the post of Joint Secretary.
