“No one wants to be beaten up, get raped or sell their bodies. It took me 20 years to voice my incident, but for me a woman keeping it all within her because she has no other choice isn’t a sign of weakness – it’s a mark of strength and something we need to start respecting.”
That’s Sapna Bhawnani for you, with her head held high, talking about being the strong, unconventional woman she is today, using the backdrop of the sexual abuse she was subjected to throughout her life.
Sapna Bhawnani, a celebrated hair stylist based in Mumbai, India, is also known for her contribution to the fields of fashion, photography, entertainment and reality television, most popularly Bigg Boss. And this post on the Humans of Bombay Facebook page is now viral, for the right reasons. Because it is not very often that someone musters up the courage to talk about the atrocities he has been subjected to, and in her case, sexual abuse.
She speaks a familiar story. Oozing grit and confidence in self, she talks in a non-apologetic manner, blunt like she has always been, moving us all a bit at least. While scrolling down the news feed, pausing to see her story, there are many of us here resonating with what she shared, hanging on to her every word, because, yes, we have been there too. Many of us have been subjected to sexual abuse of various nature by complete strangers on one hand , and then, by the people we have adored in our lives.
Sapna spoke for many a person when she said that someone keeping all his pains bottled within him is not a sign of weakness but great strength. True, many a times it requires greater strength to live with the pain that truth brings along than reacting. While many of us might question her statement whether she means one remaining silent while being inflicted with torture and negativity is a stronger person that the one who reacts to the inhumane acts, Sapna manages to ignite a fire in all those hearts which are silently bleeding. Because eventually when the sun shines, we’ll be glad about the scars, because they will remind us about how tough times were and how triumphantly we have lived through them.
Thank you Sapna Bhawnani for imparting that level of courage to the many of us, who were almost falling apart, waiting for a ray of hope to shine through our lives.
