Saina who has a 1-0 Career records against Marin, going into Sunday’s match, logged the first point and displayed some deft net play against her rival, stroking in some delectably timed volleys to take a 5-2 lead in the opening game.
Marin raised her game and the decibel levels and fought a tough match but Saina was quick on the counter-attack and returned her rival’s attempted smashes with quiet intensity.
Saina is now in her 6th year at the top in world badminton, having first made QF in the 2008 Olympics and the bronze at Beijing in 2012.
She was ranked World no 8, and now will improve her position with this win.
She is the only top international player from India to hold her top world ranking beating players ranked higher than her, for 6 years. No other Indian player in any sport be it tennis or TT has been able to stay at the top of the world ranking.
PV Sindhu, 18 years old and world No 10, before this tournament is also sure to improve her ranking. She lost in the QF of the Australian open.
Since 2013, both Sindhu and Saina have been in the top 10 in the world. This has never happened before in any discipline where we had two players in the top 10.
