IIT JEE – 4 times a Year
Good news for all IIT aspirants as Human Resource and Development minister, Kapil Sibal recently announced that henceforth students can have 4 attempts in a year at the JEE (Joint Entrance Examination). Would this mean a sigh of relief for all aspirants who earlier had to do or die in their first attempt at the examination or wait for another year?
JEE Joint Entrance Exam is the common exam for 15 IITs. Over Six lakh students sit for the JEE. An aspirant sitting for the JEE will soon be allowed four attempts at the entrance test to secure a seat in one of the 15 IITs and other institutes like IISER accepting the JEE score.
Students now have the opportunity to try their luck 4 times in a year and increase their chances to bag a seat in the prestigious institutes. Does this also mean no more suicide attempts on failing miserably at the IIT exams? Is this a move on the part of the government to give hope of life to many aspirants who study hard without even paying much attention to their 12th Board exams?
Students used to measure their life before the IIT exam and after. It was the most important event in their life and their parents life too. Parents expectations were huge. Many didn’t do well despite intense preparations, year long stay in Kota. Reason is that 12th Boards/State entrance exams/ all came at the same time.
IIT was the most important and if you messed it up then getting any where else was not the same thing. It was like falling in love with IIT but getting an arranged marriage with another lesser known college.
Ankit Agrawal wrote JEE twice, first in 2006 and then again in 2007. Unfortunately, he didn’t figure in the merit list in 2006 which was a huge disappointment. “Given the efforts I had put in. I wouldn’t deny that it was emotionally the worst phase of my life and a blemish on an outstanding and illustrious academic record I had till class X where I secured 97% in the Board exams, says Agrawal.
He wrote the JEE again in 2007, this time he got a rank of 4800 which wasn’t good enough for a ‘good’ branch in any IIT so he opted to join BITS-Pilani – Goa Campus where he was offered Computer Science. “Having gone through a lot of ups and downs, I’m all for a new, less stressful system but a lot of things need to be worked out first else the new system might end up becoming a political football,” fears Agrawal.
Now the exam can be given 4 times a year. Which means you can:
a) Prepare for the other exams and do well.
b) Sit for IIT exam at another convenient time of the year.
c) You can re take the exam after 3 months, if you dont get good marks . So its not a do or die attempt which meant waiting for 1 year if you did not make it this time.
