All work and no play is what people generally associate with IIMs. However, IIM Shillong begs to differ, reports Prachi Parekh
With the initiative of the Prof. Ashoke K. Dutta, Director, IIM Shillong, the members of IIM Shillong community have joined hands with the Shillong Lajong Football Club. The IIM faculties will help keep players in shape psychologically.
Not only will this partnership allow the Football Club access to IIM’s infrastructure and facilities, it gives the students an opportunity to take active part in the team’s preparations as Sports Management is one area that IIM Shillong looks to offer to its participants.
Established in1983 in Shillong, Lajong is the first football outfit from the Northeast to make it to the big league of Indian football — the I-League. Shillong Lajong FC was promoted to ONGC I-League First division in 2009-10 season, and has performed remarkably well in their first season in I-league for first timers. Though still engrossed in relegation fight, Shillong Lajong FC are expected to survive this season based on their frequent solid performances against big teams like stunning Mahindra United 2-1.
Shillong Lajong FC were the surprise package in this season’s Federation Cup, going on a dream run to finals and becoming neutral’s favorites. Though they were ultimately beaten, they had made a mark. This was the first time that a team from the North East had featured in the finals of the Federation Cup.
A thumbs-up to IIM Shillong and Shillong Lajong FC for this initiative.
