Designing Dreams

This independent 19 year old is exporting clothes to Spain and Italy and having a ball.

Anuradha Joshi is a management student with a difference. Besides managing two designer clothing stores in Delhi and Mumbai, she also exports her creations to Milan & Spain. All of this just at the age of 19!

At the same time, she is trying to strike a balance with her studies-BMS from Alkesh Dinesh Mody Institute (Mumbai University). After completing her 12th from Fergusson College in Pune, she came to Mumbai where she has survived and made it on her own. “It’s the only city according to me which has a soul, it just changes a person, it pushes you to do something and to top it all, it’s a very accepting place. The city loves you for what you are and that’s what really got me here.”

Eclat – the name of her stores – is as striking as the owner-cum-designer herself. “Eclat means marvellous outburst in French,” she tells us. So what drove her to designing clothes? “My granddad always told me, look at your sketches, you’re good at it, why don’t you take it up as a profession?” She admits that she never took it up seriously because management was what she had set out to do and she is not going to let go of that dream either.

After working with MTV in event management and marketing, she went up to her parents at 18 and told them she wanted to be a designer. “I was working in television, and it was really breaking my head. I was working 14-15 hours at a stretch and whenever I would get a break, I would do sketching. One fine day I’m like why don’t I take a break so that I can just do this?”

Anuradha has had the full financial and emotional backing of parents when it comes to fulfilling her dreams. My father said to me once, “If you manage to make your hobby your profession, you are the luckiest person on earth.” But her icon and real inspiration is her mom, a designer of Indian clothes, who helps in managing her Delhi store. “Initially all I could do was sketching, it’s from her that I have learnt about the fits and the technicals of designing.”

Her advice to the youth is that if they have a dream make sure it’s serious. “It’s important that you convince your folks. The age from 17-21, you can either make it or break it. Once you know what you wanna do in life, just chase it till you get it. It will keep running away from you, but someday you’ll get it.”

Anuradha is loving each and every moment of her life. In her fashion she finds fun and a great sense of fulfillment and relief. She is all praise for her professors who, she says, have been very understanding and her friends who are her biggest critics.

With an undying spirit to represent India on the international fashion scene, she says, “I think we’ve a lot to offer the West whether it’s fashion, kapda, style.” This nature freak who loves to get dirty in a soccer field and going on long drives is sure to give top designers something to worry about in the near future.
