Skipping Christmas is John Grisham’s first book in the comedy-satire genre. So don’t expect a fast paced legal thriller and intelligent courtroom drama.
Skipping Christmas, is the story of a whiny, cynical middle aged couple, Luther Knark and his sweet, docile wife Nora, all alone at Christmas.Their young daughter, Blair decides to spend her holidays working for the Peace Corps in Peru. Fed up with the extravagance and unnecessary spending on Christmas, Luther decides to skip the festival and go on a Caribbean cruise.
So how can anyone miss Christmas? Read on this hilarious story and you will begin to agree that festivals are getting the commercialised. The writing is excellent. The conversation between husband and wife is hilarious. Luther Knark’s sentiments regarding the festive season is justified and there comes a point when you find yourself sympathising with his motives.
The book, for all right reasons, does manage to bring a smile on the readers face. Skipping Christmas is a light breezy read that, even though being a satire on holidays and festivals, ends up making you believe in them more.
