Pramod Mane and his school buddies started Sparrow’s Shelter in 2007 to save the dwindling population of sparrows
What inspired you to start Sparrow’s Shelter?
Developing cities are witnessing a drastic reduction in the population of sparrows and other small birds, which led to the conception of Sparrow’s Shelter. These birds need to be saved before they completely vanish from urban areas. We are a group of school friends who started the home on August 15, 2007.
What activities do you undertake at the shelter?
We all share the same vision that is to save the little birds. We have designed shelter boxes under the guidance of BNHS and we spread awareness in cities like Mumbai by conducting seminars, exhibitions and campaigns campaign at schools, colleges, industrial premises and malls, etc. We urge people to adopt shelters as they are better nesting sites for the birds.
How many shelters have been placed in Mumbai?
More than 3,000 shelter boxes have been successfully placed in Mumbai and nearby cities.
What is the goal of Sparrow’s Shelter?
Our mission and aim is to protect these little birds from extinction and increase their population. Hence, we provide them a comfortable and much-needed shelter to nest in. Our work has been appreciated by Honorary Governor of Maharashtra Kateekal Sankaranarayanan and the Mayor of Mumbai Shraddha Jadhav and our shelter homes have been placed in and around the Raj Bhavan ,Mayor’s House, Byculla Zoo and other gardens.
Do any celebrities have Sparrow’s shelter?
Sachin Tendulkar, Bollywood actress Neelam and Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray are some of the celebrities who have adopted our shelters.
Any message for our readers?
Yes, definitely. We request all the readers to adopt at least one shelter box, as we can provide new and safe nesting sites to these birds. This is a crucial step to increase the dwindling population of sparrows.
