Review; Gori Tere Pyaar Mein

2 hours 28 minutes. Yes, it’s long and if you are not one of those who can sit through a movie with too many unnecessary songs and cliched plot lines, stop reading right away. This movie isn’t for you!
GTPM for me was two different films in one separated by an intermission that comes up after an excruciatingly long wait. The story is about Sriram Venkat (Imran Khan) a US-return architect who is a self-centred snob. He enjoys sitting on his ass and doing nothing but partying. Dia Sharma (Kareena Kapoor Khan) is a ‘charity worker,’ who has devoted her life to bettering the world. It’s about how their paths cross and what happens after that.
The first half of the movie, especially the first 30 minutes, felt so rushed that you aren’t even give time to realize that you were actually listening to songs which were utterly gibberish. Making way for random flashbacks and non-linear narrative doesn’t really kick-start the film. With hardly a good scene, the first half or lets say 3/4th of the first half felt like a plot that would have made sense even if it were 10 minutes long.
However, if you can survive the first half of it, you’re in for a time-pass treat. The second half of the film is like Karan Johar’s version of Lagaan + Swadesh + Ramaiya Vastavaiya + A bit of Ek Main Aur Ek Tu. While. The production value is quite slick. Although the setting is in a village, the two protagonists are always impeccably dressed. Despite being a little corny, the transformation in Imran’s character and his search for a deeper meaning in his materialistic existence is well done.
Imran Khan can’t act. I mean seriously he can’t. The only reason, I feel, he is still in the movie making business is his chocolate boy smile that fits in quite a few scenes here and there. Kareena Kapoor on the other hand, is quite okay for most part of the movie except for the part when she plays an NGO activist, because seeing her dance to a track that talks about ‘ass’ doesn’t seem digestible. Anupam Kher is good and Shraddha Kapoor has improved drastically.
The soundtrack, except for the Naina track, is torturous and a song every 10 minutes is not my idea of entertainment.
Final Verdict: With a lot of editing and a better lead actor Gori Tere Pyaar Mein could have been a good film. It still is watchable for the noble idea and social awareness that it tries to convey. Make your choice!
