Movie Review – Raees

In a fictitious city in  the state of Gujarat lives a small  boy called Raees as the state of  Gujarat is under alcohol prohibition many bootlegging cartels are active who make and sell illicit liquor. Once in school he is unable to read from the blackboard  and after a medical checkup the doctor tells him that he needs spectacles once he gets them and he can see clearly Raees starts working for a cartel boss smuggling and delivering alcohol bottles in his school bag. Raees just keeps repeating this dialogue over and over again in the film ( Banye ka dimag aur Miyabhai ki daring) and Raees just anyone who calls him ‘Battery’,

How Raees grows up and how his ambitious nature makes him the boss of a cartel and the president of all cartels in the city is the film that follows. Alongside an honest cop decides to catch Raees red handed and get him arrested and sentenced for his crimes. Who succeeds the cop or Raees is the rest of the movie for you to see.

What’s good

Shahrukh Khan gives in an earnest performance as a daring don and Messiah for the poor with the perfect look, emotion and feel. Nawazuddin Siddique plays the cop who is after Raees brilliantly award winning performance. Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub as Raees’ business partner and childhood friend gives in a worthy performance.

Director Rahul Dholakia manages to set the setting and mood of the film just right and manages to coax out superb performances from the actors.

What’s bad

The songs of the movie are its weakest link. Music by Ram Sampath is dreary. Pakistani actress Mahira Khan who plays Raees wife is a very beautiful maiden no doubt but is unable to emote properly nor is she given anything important or worthwhile to do except add in a unnecessary love angle to this serious story.

The story is just a just a cat and mouse chase between criminal and cop and there is no freshness in the script of which we have seen variations in dozens of movies.

Rahul Dholakia who has also penned the story leaves a lot of loopholes in the story which mar the film experience and also insults the intelligence.

Verdict

A good movie to watch to learn about the bootlegging syndicate in the prohibition state of Gujarat and for acting performances by Shahrukh and Nawazuddin

My Rating 2.5/5 stars
