Food Review

Rainforest Cafe, Belapur

Theme based restaurants are interesting but most are worth only a one-time visit. The owners pay so much attention to the decor that they forget about why people come to a restaurant – the food and the service. Well, I am happy to say Rainforest Café is an exception. Yes, the place is all ‘foresty’, starting with a wooden bridge you need to cross and ‘trees’ hanging over each table. There are paper lanterns designed to look like mashaals and even a crocodile which lunges at you near the restroom. But khaana-shaana bhi accha hai. The chicken biryani was excellent with succulent pieces and just the right masalas. In continental cuisines, the veg lasagna was a treat. The side order of garlic bread with cheese was also hot and crisp. There is a wide variety of drinks but I have a standard order from the cocktail menu – the caprioska (vodka with crushed ice, lemon and mint leaves). And it was excellent. If you prefer non-alcoholic beverages, they have giant iced teas and fresh lime sodas. For dessert I highly recommend the sizzling brownie. Overall, the ambience is interesting but I would go back for the food. Portions are generous so order carefully (three people can comfortably eat the biryani!). Prices offer good value – the total bill amount was a little over Rs 1,000.
