Classics Revisited@Malhar ’04, St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai
It’s that time of the year again. Prep for the 26th year of Malhar has started at Xavier’s. The theme this year is ‘Classic’ as Malhar revisits the days of yore. 1100 volunteers are expected to sign up, and over 20,000 students are anticipated to visit.
There have been a few changes in Administration as the Indian Performing Arts and Western Performing Arts departments have combined to form the Performing Arts department (really original!). A new department, W.Inc. (Workshops Incorporated) has been set up, which will organise around 15 different workshops to be conducted by several industry big-wigs. Chairperson this year is Ritu Bhandari, and she is assisted by two Vice Chairpersons, Priyanka Vieira and Shawn Mendes.
Malhar ’04 will include an Indian classical music event called ‘Darbar-e-Shan’, described as an attempt to pay tribute to the likes of R. D. Burman and Kishore Kumar and a Western music event titled Echoes, which will cater to the Rolling Stones and Elvis Presley fans. A mime workshop called ‘Face Off’ will rekindle the comical charm of Charlie Chaplin and Laurel and Hardy while ‘Pulp Fiction’, a Literary Arts event, will recreate the magic of Pride and Prejudice and Malgudi Days.
Though active preparation has just started, Malhar should be proud of the fact that the record for maximum number of adjectives used in any press release, ever, is solely theirs. With phrases like “phantasmagoric extravaganza” and “reverbrating gusto” being used to describe it, everyone’s looking forward to the biggest college festival this side of south Bombay!
