Interested in making a career as a Chemical Engineer? JAM brings you gyaan about the field
Chemical Engineering is considered the most versatile of engineering branches and with good reason. It combines the work of various professions such as chemists, industrial engineers, materials engineers and electrical engineers, for the production of chemicals and related by-products.
The work of a Chemical Engineer entails invention, development, design, operation and management of processes in industries. With rapid changes in technology and need for alternatives due to global warming, the demand for chemical engineers is increasing.
New On the Scene:
In order to give students of this field international exposure, the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIchE) has tied up with the Institute of Chemical Engineers (IchemE), which is a hub for chemical, biochemical and process engineering professionals worldwide. This tie-up will give students the opportunity to participate in a one-week student exchange programme. It includes a visit to at least two industrial companies which exposes students to varied process technologies. Attending various chemical engineering events, another part of the programme, will not only increase their knowledge but also give them a platform for networking. Lastly, students can present their research papers and experience the culture of another country.
In September this year IchemE sent four students to India from Edinburgh University, UK, University of Auckland, New Zealand, University of Sydney, Australia and University of KwalaZulu-Natal, South Africa. They attended the SCHEMCOM, the largest chemical engineering event organised by Indian students. Cultural activities included visits to various temples and places of interest. They also visited Jocil Ltd. known for manufacturing soap, which gave them an insight into the kind of research done in India.
Four students have already been chosen from India and will be going to UK in November. This programme, that had begun in 2007, has taken off really well year after year, thus widening the horizons of the students in this stream.
