12 women centric movies you should watch

Celebrate women and men everyday and not just on the consumer driven 8th of March. With Gulaabi Gang, Gulaab Gang , Queen and Kaanchi releasing , here is a list of women centric movies one could catch up on.

  1. Maati Maay (Marathi):  Stars Nandita Das and Atul Kulkarni in the lead roles. The movie is based on “Chandi” the protagonist who by caste is supposed to be the keeper of children’s graves. The story traces concepts like superstition and witch hunt.
  2. Mother India (Hindi):  One of the iconic movies in Hindi stars Nargis and Sunil Dutt in lead roles. One of the highest earning movies when adjusted against inflation. Portrays a multifaceted picture of the protagonist, the one who overcomes obstacles, attaining a Goddess- like position and human conflict.
  3. Erin Brokovich (English):  A fine performance by Julia Roberts, it is a dramatized version of Erin Brokovich’s life.
  4. Bandit Queen (Hindi):  One of the most powerful performances ever, stars Seema Biswas in the lead. The protagonist is Phoolan Devi, a bandit.
  5. English Vinglish (Hindi):  Sridevi made her comeback with the film, it is about a homemaker who is not valued by her own family and undermined because she cannot speak the global language English.
  6. Andhi (Hindi):  Stars the late Suchitra Sen and Sanjeev Kumar in the lead roles, it is based on former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s life.
  7. Arth (Hindi):  Brought together arch rivals Smita Patil and Shabana Azmi. The movie is about betrayal, domestic violence and independence.
  8. Chandni Bar (Hindi): Tabu plays the role of a sex worker who struggles to maintain the balance between the dark world of sex and her children.
  9. Damini (Hindi): A woman goes against her own family, about gang rape and domestic violence.
  10. Kahaani ( Hindi): A pregnant  Vidya Balan comes to the  city of joy to find her husband, a thriller.
  11. No One Killed Jessica (Hindi):  Based on the Jessica Lal Murder case.
  12. The Help (English):  Set in America, when slavery and segregation was at its peak.
